Origin: Granted to families all from Portsmouth and led by Captain John Fisher, brother-in-law to Governor John Wentworth, this town was first settled in 1769 as Protectworth. Captain Fisher, however, chose to side with Governor Wentworth in loyalty to England, and had all his holdings confiscated by the colonies. When the town was incorporated in 1794, the name Springfield was adopted, a name common to many American cities and towns.

Population Trends: Springfield's population has grown rapidly over the last thirty years after little growth in the prior twenty years. Decennial growth rates ranged from a 13 percent decrease between 1950-1960 to a 72 percent increase between 1970-1980. Over fifty years, Springfield's population increased by a total of 621 residents, going from 324 in 1950 to 945 residents in 2000. The 2003 Census estimate for Springfield was 1,036 residents, which ranked 181st among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2003: 22.2 persons per square mile of land area. Springfield contains 43.6 square miles of land area and 0.9 square miles of inland water area.
