Origin: This town was originally granted in 1735 by Massachusetts Governor Belcher as Number 9, the ninth in a line of forts established to guard against Indian attacks. It was regranted in 1753 by Governor Benning Wentworth, as Dupplin, after Sir Thomas Hay, Lord Dupplin of Scotland, who had been in charge of the settlement of Nova Scotia. Following the Peace of Paris in 1761, when terms of many grants had not been carried out, the town was regranted as Lempster, named for Sir Thomas Fermor of Lempster, England, who was a Wentworth relation.

Population Trends: Lempster's population grew three times larger over the last fifty years, with above average growth rates over three of the last five decades. Decennial growth rates ranged from a 12 percent decrease between 1950-1960 to a 77 percent increase between 1970-1980. Lempster's population increased by a total of 662 residents, going from 309 in 1950 to 971 residents in 2000. The 2003 Census estimate for Lempster was 1,044 residents, which ranked 180th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2003: 30.8 persons per square mile of land area. Lempster contains 32.3 square miles of land area and 0.4 square miles of inland water area.
