Origin: Granted in 1766, this town was named in honor of Admiral Washington Shirley, Viscount Tamworth, a close friend of Governor Benning Wentworth. The Admiral's daughter, Selina Shirley, was instrumental in the founding of Dartmouth College. Tamworth includes the villages of Chocorua, Wonalancet, and Whittier. Mount Whittier in Ossipee, like the village, was named for poet John Greenleaf Whittier.

Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 266 residents in 1790

Population Trends: Tamworth's population grew well above the statewide average rate over the last thirty years. After decreasing by one percent between 1950-1960, decennial growth peaked with a 59 percent increase between 1970-1980. Over fifty years, Tamworth's population increased by a total of 1,485 resident, going from 1,025 in 1950 to 2,510 residents in 2000. The 2003 Census estimate for Tamworth was 2,549 residents, which ranked 113th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2003: 42.3 persons per square mile of land area. Tamworth contains 59.8 square miles of land area and 0.8 square miles of inland water area.
