Origin: This area was one of the first to have land grants set aside for soldiers who had survived the Seven Years' War against France. The land covered by these grants, parts of Eaton and Albany, was incorporated in 1852 as Madison, in honor of President James Madison who was born 100 years earlier.

Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 826 residents in 1860

Population Trends: Population in Madison grew just over four times larger in fifty years, with above average growth rates over four of the last five decades. Decennial growth rates ranged from a 12 percent decrease between 1950-1960 to an 84 percent increase between 1970-1980. Madison's population increased by a total of 1,498 residents, going from 486 in 1950 to 1,984 residents in 2000. The 2003 Census estimate for Madison was 2,143 residents, which ranked 128th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2003: 52.4 persons per square mile of land area. Madison contains 38.7 square miles of land area and 2.2 square miles of inland water area.
