Incorporated: 1787

Origin: Carved out of portions of Gilsum, Stoddard, Nelson, and Keene, this town was named in honor of General John Sullivan, a Revolutionary War hero. General Sullivan served as a member of the Continental Congress, Adjutant General to Washington, and Major General of the Northern Army. He was elected President of New Hampshire in 1786, and the town of Sullivan was created the following year.

Population Trends: Sullivan's population grew at or above the statewide average over three of the last five decades. Decennial growth rates went from a four percent decrease between 1950-1960, to a 56 percent increase between 1970-1980, to a six percent increase between 1990-2000. Sullivan's population grew by a total of 474 residents, going from 272 in 1950 to 746 residents in 2000. The 2003 Census estimate for Sullivan was 759 residents, which ranked 203rd among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2003: 40.9 persons per square mile of land area. Sullivan contains 18.5 square miles of land area and 0.2 square miles of inland water area.
