Origin: Roxbury was once a part of Monadnock Number 5, one of the settlements reserved for soldiers of the French wars. Monadnock Number 5 became Marlborough, and in 1812, a group of citizens successfully petitioned for incorporation as a separate town. It was named Roxbury after their old village, now part of Boston.

Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 366 residents in 1820

Population Trends: Roxbury's population doubled over the last five decades, but it remains below 250 residents. Decennial growth rates ranged from a four percent decrease between 1990-2000 to a 31 percent increase between 1980-1990. Over fifty years, Roxbury's population increased by a total of 120 residents, going from 117 in 1950 to 237 residents in 2000. The 2003 Census estimate for Roxbury was 240 residents, which ranked 231st among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns, the fourth smallest community.

Population Density, 2003: 20.0 persons per square mile of land area. Roxbury contains 12.0 square miles of land area and 0.3 square miles of inland water area.
