Origin: Originally a part of Rochester, this town was long known as Three Ponds or Milton Mills. Located along the Maine border on the Salmon River, it was the location of several mills, and the scene of early manufacturing. The name Milton may have come from a relative of the Wentworth Governors, William Fitzwilliam, Earl of Fitzwilliam and Viscount Milton. Milton is home to Mount Teneriffe, among the earliest of New Hampshire's mountains to be named, and so named in honor of the volcano on the Canary Islands.

Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 1,005 residents in 1810

Population Trends: Milton's population increased by an even 2,400 residents between 1950's Census count of 1,510 and 2000's count of 3,910 residents. The town's population decreased by six percent decreased between 1950-1960, then increased by 31 percent between both 1960-1970 and 1970-1980, by 51 percent between 1980-1990, and by six percent between 1990-2000. The 2003 Census estimate for Milton was 4,250 residents, which ranked 87th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2003: 122.1 persons per square mile of land area. Milton contains 33.1 square miles of land area and 1.2 square miles of inland water area.
