Origin: This area was first settled in 1768 when it was part of Saville. The town was incorporated as Wendell in 1781, and is now called Sunapee. In 1791 the southern portion of Wendell was combined with territory taken from Fishersfield (Newbury), Lempster, Unity, and Newport to form a new town. It was probably named Goshen because many residents had relatives in Goshen, Connecticut, and had served in a Revolutionary regiment with soldiers from that same town.

Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 383 residents in 1800
 
Population Trends: Population change for Goshen totaled 388 over 50 years, from 356 in 1950 to 744 in 2000. The largest decennial percent change was a 39 percent increase between 1970 and 1980, followed by a 31 percent increase over the next decade. The 2008 Census estimate for Goshen was 818 residents, which ranked 196th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
 
Population Density, 2008: 36.5 persons per square mile of land area. Goshen contains 22.4 square miles of land area and 0.1 square miles of inland water area.
