Located between the White Mountains and Squam Lake is cozy Holderness, NH. Settled in 1751, Native Americans and early European settlers would use Squam Lake as a trade route and float goods from point A to point B. Today, Holderness is still largely rural and visitors of Holderness appreciate its natural beauty and its close proximity to both the lake and the mountains.

Natural Science Center
Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is an excellent opportunity for children to learn about the outdoors. The center offers an outdoor trail with open meadows, mature forests, and marsh boardwalks connected to interactive natural exhibits where native animals reside, like black bears, mountain lions, raptors, river otters, bobcats, and more. Along with the two hour long walking trail, Squam Lakes Natural Science Center offers cruises with a guide who points out wildlife, such as loons and bald eagles. It depends on the day for what exactly you'll see, but you're sure to see some kind of unique wildlife while at the Natural Science Center!
West
Rattlesnake Mountain
West Rattlesnake Mountain is an easy/moderate hike with a large payoff of gorgeous views over Squam Lake and its islands. Hikers can take either the Old Bridle Path or Ridge Trail to gain about 450 feet of elevation over about two miles. As you climb the mountain, you'll see a variety of flowers, trees, and plants. The natural habitation, combined with the views at the top will give you plenty to enjoy!

One of New Hampshire's finest marianas is located right in Holderness.
