Looking for something to do this weekend? Head over to Lake Winnipesaukee for the Great Meredith Rotary Fishing Derby. Now in its 36th year, the Derby draws thousands of anglers from across the country. At Derby Headquarters in Meredith the atmosphere is almost carnival-like, with food vendors mingling with hundreds of snowmobiles, helicopters, and ATVs amid the bobhouse city. NH Fish & Game will be hosting a free ice fishing clinic - geared toward kids, but everyone is welcome - on Saturday, February 7, sessions running hourly starting at 10 am.
Some fun facts:
- Grand prize this year is $15,000
- After the Derby is over, all unwanted or non-winning fish are donated to the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center. The fish are used to feed the creatures there - apparently the bears love trout-sicles!
- Last year's Grand Prize winner was 11-year-old Brady King from Tamworth!
This is a family-friendly event - bundle up and bring the kids and the camera. Whether you choose to fish or just gawk, this event has a little of everything that makes New Hampshire special.
